SUN Studio is an award winning design firm specializing in sustainable urban neighborhoods. We provide full spectrum planning and design services, from the scale of the community to the scale of the home. We pride ourselves on our ability to listen to our clients to achieve their sustainable project goals and work effectively with jurisdictional staff and consultants to gain entitlements, permitting. and coordinate detailing and construction.

Who We Are

Michael Tavel and David Kahn have been collaborating on sustainable architecture, landscape and planning since the early 1990s. That partnership became known as SUN Studio in 2015. Their projects have been the recipients of dozens of regional and national awards.

Michael received a Masters of Architecture from UC Berkeley with numerous honors and is nationally recognized for climate-responsive, sustainable urban neighborhood design and architecture. He worked in New York City, Vienna, Austria, and San Francisco before he and David moved to teach at the University of Colorado in the early 1990s. Michael and David created a summer urban design and planning program in Prague which they taught throughout the '90s. After five years with the New Urbanist firm Wolff Lyon Architects in Boulder, Michael started collaborating in 2003 with David on the design of sustainable mixed-use neighborhoods. Since 2015, that collaboration had been known as SUN Studio.

David received both a Masters of Landscape Architecture and a Masters of Architecture with numerous honors from UC Berkley. He taught for many years at the University of Colorado while also maintaining the design practice of David Kahn Studio. David and Michael created a summer urban design and planning program in Prague which they taught throughout the '90s. Since 2003, they have collaborated on sustainable urban mixed-use neighborhoods, including landscapes and architecture, through what is now called SUN Studio.
